Volodymyr Vynnychenko (1880‒1951) ― a prominent Ukrainian prose writer and playwright. In Ukrainian literature at the beginning of the 20th century, Vynnychenko initiated the trend of neorealism. He was one of the most influential political figures of his time. He lived and worked in emigration for many years.
"The Solar Machine" is the first Ukrainian science fiction novel. The events in the novel unfold in the early 1920s in Berlin. Rudolf Shtor creates a fantastic "solar machine" that allows food to be produced using solar energy. The machine is a liberation of humanity from traditional ways of feeding. To obtain "solar bread," one must place grass or leaves into it and let sunlight pass through, after which it should be watered with sweat.
The science fiction invention has transformed people's perception of the world. Everyday life has changed, and people are beginning to fight for the "solar machine."
