The mother of one of the descendants of the famous Roksolana was another Ukrainian woman from Podillia - Nadiya, who in the harem of Sultan Ibrahim Bozevilny was named Khatija Turkhan. She lived in the tumultuous years of the middle of the 17th century, full of uprisings in the provinces of the Ottoman Empire, riots of janissaries and shopkeepers in Constantinople, bloody massacres, executions and the overthrow of her husband-sultan. Khatija Turkhan had a lot of trials and tribulations. But as the wife of the ruler, and later the regent of the minor Sultan Mehmed the Fourth, she steadily overcame them.
During the reign of Khatija's son, the Ukrainian Cossacks led by Bohdan Khmelnytskyi and Pyotr Doroshenko, in the struggle for a single free Ukraine, received the Ottoman protectorate and acted together with the Janissaries and the Crimean Tatar army against Polish and Moscow oppression.
Unfortunately, the figure of this Ukrainian sultana, unlike Roksolana, is little known in Ukraine.
Candidate of art history, journalist, author of the popular science book "Roksolana: Myths and Realities" (2015, 2nd ed. 2016) Oleksandra Shutko wrote a novel about Khatija Turkhan based on historical facts, archival materials and research by Turkish, American and Western European scientists. in which not only events and heroes are real, but also their dialogues, which have reached our times thanks to Ottoman chroniclers.
