The events reproduced in the novel depict the life and daily life of the Zaporizhzhya Cossacks of the 17th century. The romantic Cossack love of the young knight Pavel and the Cossack daughter Orisa, the noble brotherhood of ordinary Zaporozhian soldiers, the wisdom and military skill of their leader Sahaidachny, battles on sea and land, sea campaigns and storming of fortresses, the liberation of slaves from Turkish penal servitude — all this captivates and mesmerizes the reader, awakens a dormant sense of national dignity and pride for one's people.

The name of the people's teacher and writer Spyridon Cherkasenko was deleted from the literary process in Soviet times and banned on the territory of Ukraine from the beginning of the 1920s. His work was allowed to be studied only after the declaration of Ukraine's independence.

The novel was written in 1934 in Gorny Chernoshitsy, the first edition was published in 1937 in Lviv. The book was written as a novel from Cossack times for young people and became a bestseller at the time, gaining wide popularity in the west of Ukraine (it was simply not printed in the center and east of Ukraine).
The reprint was published in Winnipeg, Canada, in the library of the Friends of the Ukrainian Book Club (1952).
This work gives a complete answer to who Spiridon Cherkasenko was, what values, life rules he advocated until the very end of his life.
